Owlbert Terms

These are the terms for using Owlbert, the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute of Marketing Science's evidence service for its sponsor members. Where your organisation has a signed agreement with the Institute, that agreement comes first and these terms fill the gaps. Effective 14 September 2026.

Who may use Owlbert

Owlbert is for the Institute's sponsor members and the people their organisation names. Access is personal: a work email and an access token that belong to one person. Keep the token to yourself. If it is shared or lost, tell us and we issue a new one; the old one stops working. The Institute may withdraw access when a sponsorship ends or when these terms are broken.

What Owlbert is, and is not

Owlbert gives your AI assistant the Institute's empirical findings, its research library and a verified NBD-Dirichlet model. It reports what the evidence shows, with a confidence grade and a link to the source. It does not promise that a plan will work. Marketing outcomes depend on execution, competition and chance; the Institute's laws describe regularities, not certainties. Cards marked DRAFT carry provisional wording and figures awaiting researcher review.

Your AI assistant does the reasoning and the writing. It can misread a card, skip a tool call or add its own view. Owlbert asks it to label where each claim comes from; check the label and the link before you act on an answer that matters.

Using the content

The law cards, answers, reports and model outputs are the Institute's copyright. Use them for your organisation's own marketing work and internal documents, with attribution to the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute. Do not republish them, resell them, share them outside your organisation, copy the library in bulk, or use them to train or fine-tune a model. Numbers you supply to the model remain yours.

Fair use of the service

Use Owlbert through an AI assistant or the calculator pages as a person would. Do not probe or bypass the sign-in, run bulk or automated extraction, or use the service for anything unlawful. Calls are logged, as the privacy page explains, and access that breaks these terms is withdrawn.

Availability and change

Owlbert is a research service, not a utility. We keep it running on a best-effort basis and give no uptime commitment. Tools, wording and cards change as the evidence and the researchers' review move on; sometimes your assistant will need its connector refreshed or reconnected. We may change or withdraw parts of the service and will say so on your setup page.

Liability

Owlbert is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, the Institute and Adelaide University accept no liability for decisions made, or losses suffered, in reliance on an answer, a model output or the service being unavailable. Nothing here removes rights that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. These terms are governed by the law of South Australia.

Privacy and contact

What Owlbert collects and keeps is set out on the privacy page. Questions about these terms go to bill.page@marketingscience.info.
